ISO 50001 – Energy Management System

Energy is a critical constituent in most organisations, and the usage can have major cost implications. This standard helps you take a structured approach towards measuring and monitoring how much energy you use. By measuring and monitoring energy use, the standard will help you reduce costs and improve energy performance as well as helping you meet environmental and carbon reduction targets.

Investing in an ISO 50001 energy management system is an investment in improving our planet. We encourage companies who chose to take this step to reduce waste, costs, and risks while supporting the environment in the process. Therefore, we are gifting one of our IMSM trees to each company that invests in an ISO 50001 as a way to celebrate their decision by giving back and helping the planet.

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is the international standard for an Energy Management Systems (EnMS). It is applicable to any organisation – whatever your size, industry, or location to manage your energy, including procurement and use. ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001.

ISO 50001 specifies requirements an organisation needs to establish, implement, maintain, and improve an energy management system. That enables an organisation to take a systematic approach to achieve continual improvement of energy performance, energy efficiency, and energy conservation.

What are the benefits of ISO 50001?

  • Increase your energy efficiency performance, productivity, and compliance
  • Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy
  • Help manage risks surrounding future energy supply
  • Cut energy bills, and add the savings to your bottom line
  • Build and support your reputation as a company with good environmental credentials
  • Promote best practice in energy management through your supply chain, leading to improved stakeholder relationships with customers, suppliers and investors
  • Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use
  • Continually improve energy management

ISO 50001 offers organisations, through the development of an energy management system (EnMS), a system to tackle climate change and conserve resources, through using energy more efficiently.

It helps organisations manage energy supply and energy uses and consumption, including measurement, documentation, and reporting, design and procurement practices for energy using equipment, systems, processes, and personnel.

What is involved?

Our consultant will perform a gap analysis which acts as the initial step in the review of your company’s internal processes and practices or management systems, where applicable, to determine where your company is today in relation to achieving the standard.

If required, IMSM will develop and deliver tailored training programmes for your staff to supplement your ISO certification. This ensures a full understanding and implementation of the quality controls being put in place, by way of employee development.

The external audit is the monitoring of your company’s conformance to the ISO standard. IMSM will continually support your business through the aforementioned stages as well as leading up to the audit, offering support and guidance to conformity. Once your organisation is confirmed as being ISO standard compliant, your organisation will be submitted to the certifying body deemed suitable. Your organisation will then be awarded the ISO certification.

Steps to getting ISO 50001 certified

Working towards ISO 50001 certification with IMSM is a trouble-free, step-by-step approach.

  1. Initial consultation
We help you outline your goals, focusing on what your business wants to achieve and how it defines success, particularly in relation to your client’s requirements. You and your ISO consultants will agree on reasonable outcomes and delivery dates.
  2. Producing your organisation’s ISO 50001 manual system documentation
Next, the IMSM consultants will audit your existing procedures and help you document the new systems that will help deliver success – both existing and how you will improve these. The manual system documentation sets out how your business should operate going forward so that it can deliver ISO 50001.
You will be able to view the manual system documentation, along with most other relevant documentation, on our client portal IMSMLoop. It offers a comprehensive insight into the progress of your ISO implementation, along with copies of the relevant audit reports, certifications, and any necessary corrective actions. The portal serves as a central hub for tracking your ISO journey.
  3. Training you to adopt the ISO 50001 framework
While the manual is a vital document moving forward, it is even more important that it gets put to practical use. We work with the senior management team to ensure the framework is embedded throughout your organisation. We can also develop and deliver tailored training for staff to ensure that the understanding and implementation of ISO 50001 is watertight. This will create consistency across your organisation, transforming your business from day one so it is optimised for efficiency, continual improvement, and greater profitability.
  4. Submission to a third-party external auditor
Before you can be awarded the ISO 50001 certification, your organisation applies to the third-party certifying body that you have selected to conduct your audit. This audit objectively determines whether your business conforms to ISO 50001, and the relevant accompanying documentation is accessible through our client portal, IMSMLoop.

As we have provided excellent support and guidance to your business every step of the way, you can rest assured that your ISO 50001 certification will be successful.
