ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 – can you combine them?

March 27th, 2023 By Amywright

The introduction of Annex SL aimed to streamline the approach to designing management systems. Before this, organisations managing multiple management systems would have found themselves duplicating their time and resources trying to fill the requirements of each system. Now, integrating environmental management systems like ISO 14001 and quality management systems like ISO 9001 is easier than ever.

What are the processes involved in both systems?

Quality management systems and environmental management systems have a number of processes in common. These include:

  • Creation and distribution of policies and objectives
  • Creation and management of documents and records
  • Training relevant staff
  • Focus on leadership and responsibilities
  • Control of non-conformities
  • Corrective/preventative action
  • Internal audits
  • Continuous improvement

If you already have ISO 9001 in place, you can add the necessary procedures required for an environmental management system (and vice versa).

If you have neither system in place, you can implement the two as merged systems, combining all documents that pertain to the same process.

What processes are specific to ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 follows almost all the processes that are included in ISO 9001, however there are a few additional elements to consider:

  • Environmental policy
  • Legal requirements
  • Environmental aspects
  • Emergency preparedness

What are the benefits of integrating the systems?

Integrating ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 can be extremely advantageous to your business.

  1. Save time and resources: a lot of the processes involved in getting certified in each standard are the same (or similar), so you save time, money, and resources on things like staff training and internal and external auditing.
  2. Improve business performance: both ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 are designed to increase efficiency in business processes. With a focus on continual improvement you should find that you are constantly looking for ways to make your business more efficient and productive.
  3. Improve business reputation: having the mark of ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 on your business’ website shows a dedicated commitment to the quality of your service, to continual improvement, and to reducing your environmental impact.
  4. Reduced documentation (and duplication): you can use one set of documentation to meet the requirements of both standards – saving you time and avoiding unnecessary duplication of work.
  5. A more integrated approach to business processes: implementing ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 through an integrated approach allows your business processes to be reviewed with the whole business in mind. The systems encourage a holistic view of your business, requiring all staff at all levels to get involved in implementing and maintaining the integrated management systems.
