Most companies wishing to become ISO certified are seeking a registrar with outstanding credentials to help implement and operate a first-class quality system, whilst forging an excellent, ongoing relationship. IMSM aims to measure up well to these expectations with their clients, such as JH Varty. John Varty, President said, “We initially chose IMSM through recommendation after our local representative, John Hill, presented us with some other IMSM users to talk to, some of whom were also our customers. IMSM have provided excellent service. Their audits have been thorough and well presented. ”
Established in 1985, J H Varty Machinery Ltd began selling new and used industrial machinery in Barrie, Toronto and surrounding areas, serving a customer base of metal and woodworking industries, metal fabrication, construction, tool and die, agriculture, institutional and automotive customers.
As business steadily increased, the company moved to its present location in 2003 with a staff of 10. J H Varty now has the largest machinery and industrial supply showroom north of Toronto and has expanded its trading areas as far as Sudbury, North Bay and the Newmarket area, in addition to selling equipment in most of the other Provinces in Canada.
To complement the machinery, J H Varty specialises in a large stock of machine shop items, cutting tools, indexable carbides and CNC tooling and has partnered with leading manufacturers to provide customers with problem solving and cost saving solutions. They offer many turn-key packages of tooling and accessories to accompany each machine, both conventional and CNC as required, and also offer a complete line of MRO items, safety supplies and material handling.
In explaining the reasons for pursuing certification, John said, “We deal with some large automotive manufacturers who will only deal with ISO certified suppliers, so we didn’t want to jeopardise our opportunities. We also were encouraged by some other suppliers to achieve ISO 9001:2000.”
In addition to added credibility from the customer’s viewpoint, John said that the company has benefited by tightening up procedures, arranging more meetings and better control of its systems.
Although there were some prior concerns that it would add too much paperwork and tracking to justify the extra cost and time, after IMSM explained in more detail that they were already performing most of the procedures anyway, they felt more comfortable about the process.
John concluded by saying, “The benefit of being ISO certified has probably been the retention and possibly attainment of new business because of credibility and the fact that a small company such as ours has taken the extra step to become a world class organisation.”
