Fastlink Data cables have used IMSM successfully for more than 10 years, so were the natural choice to help them achieve ISO 9001.
Allan Oakes, Managing Director said, “I come from a quality background having been Company Quality Manager for Tricom for 8 years and a lecturer in Quality Assurance and industrial processes at Swindon College for 3 years. I chose IMSM on merit and to date they have not let us down.”
Incorporated in 1993, Swindon-based Fastlink Data cables has been supplying cable assemblies to the telecoms, data comms and computer sectors, offering a bespoke and fast response service. During the last few years, the company has diversified into other commercial and industrial sectors including, military, education, transportation, satellite and many more. They have recently become "Approved Suppliers" to VOSO of digital tachograph cable, and offer a selection of cable assemblies ranging from simple networking cables up to bespoke designs for large national projects.
Describing the significance of ISO 9001, Allan said, “The principle reason for maintaining a quality system is because we manufacture a wide range of cables, where we are never the design authority and need to have a disciplined approach. We can link our quality assurance system to our training programme, creating a good focus on the end product. The main advantage of maintaining a quality system is that it provides a focal point that is non-emotive, to which all the staff can identify. This can be useful in going forward.”
Embracing ISO 9001 with IMSM’s assistance has enabled Fastlink to establish an advanced quality system based upon formalised procedures. The staff have become more process-oriented in the way they operate their quality system, enabling them to be more solution-focused towards their customers.
Recognising the importance of customer perception, Allan concluded by saying, “Without a doubt any new large potential customer would need to see Fastlink operate a basic system, even if it meant that they would still conduct their own vendor assessment. This situation is quite normal with our MOD supplies.”
