Counting sheep (and goats, and cattle, and...)
Australian
company ALEIS International (Pty) manufactures radio frequency identification
(RFID) readers for the livestock industry. ALEIS is the major supplier
of infrastructure reading equipment to the sale-yards and abattoirs
(over 98% of all installations) for the National Livestock Identification
Scheme (NLIS) in Australia, and also a supplier to larger properties
and feedlots They also have systems in Botswana, Brazil, Brunei,
Canada, Malaysia, Sweden, Vanuatu and Italy.
The NLIS database was established in response
to the European Union's demand for a tamper proof animal identification
and traceback system. Producers on the NLIS database are required
to identify cattle with an accredited radio frequency identification
device (RFID). The ability to obtain accurate, individual carcase
feedback was potentially the biggest benefit of the scheme
The company which is based in Jandowae, Queensland,
has 20 employees and has 40 years of experience in the Australian
livestock industry. They have held ISO9001:2000 certification for
several years, and find it enhances their credibility. Dorothy Finlayson
commented: "We chose IMSM/QAS International for the ISO process
because of the professional and easy way we were treated; nothing
was a problem. Yes we would recommend them, they were a pleasure
to deal with."
