India Bans Nestle’s Maggi Noodles

The food Safety Standards Authority of India have stated that food giant ‘Nestle’, has failed to comply with Food health and safety laws.

Nestle has been forced to withdraw its brand ‘Maggi’ from stores as regulators found lead to be higher than the legal limit in several packets of their noodles.

The company is now under further inspection as regulators have discovered the chemical monosodium glutamate, widely known as MSG is in the noodles. Yet the packets of ‘Maggi Oats Masala Noodles with Tastemaker’ are labelled with ‘No added MSG’.

“Tests in Delhi showed that 10 out of 13 samples contained lead nearly seven times over the permissible limits. Once we have all the results, Nestle India will be given an opportunity to explain,” news agency AFP quoted Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry official G Gurucharan as saying.

Maggi Noodles are banned in India’s capital, Delhi and several other states for 15 days. Their shares have dropped by more than 10% on the Bombay stock exchange and the recalls have cost them billions in rupees.
